WHAT: The American Choreography Awards, produced in association with the Academy of Dance on Film, celebrates its tenth year with a live dance extravaganza. Choreographers nominated in eight different categories of choreography for the camera - feature film, short film, television special, episodic and variety show, fight choreography, commercials and music videos – will compete for the dance in media’s highest honor of achievement.

Celebrity presenters include: Marge Champion, Roy Disney, Carmen Electra, Jasmine Guy, Lainie Kazan, Jaime King, Randal Kleiser, Frank Langella, Kathy Najimy, Elise Neal, Valerie Pettiford, Matthew Rushing, Gary Smith, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ben Vereen, and Nita Whittaker. Attending: Cyd Charisse, Dule Hill, Raquel Welch and Fayard Nicholas.

This year’s Honorees are recognized for their notable contributions to the art and craft of choreography for the camera. Educator Award recipient Ka-Ron Brown Lehman, the artistic director of the L.A. County School of the Arts, will receive a tribute featuring former student and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater principal dancer Matthew Rushing, joined by vocalist Nita Whittaker. In recognition of Walt Disney, who will receive a posthumous Innovator Award, a collection of rare, memorable animated clips will be screened, and a special surprise performance honoring Career Achievement recipient Kenny Ortega promises to bring down the house.

The awards ceremony will also feature show-stopping performances by: Diavolo Dance Company, David Parsons Dance Company, Emmy Award-winner Jason Samuels-Smith who will improvise tap to accompany the spoken-word poetry from Norman Lear’s nonpartisan register to vote campaign “Declare Yourself,” Sideswipe, an extreme martial-arts based group that blends traditional Karate and Tae Kwon Do with gymnastics and acrobatics, Rich and Tone Talauega, who will be joined onstage by Tommy the Clown and the Krumpers. The opening number, choreographed by ACA Director Ramon del Barrio and former Hubbard Street dancer Francisco Avina, will feature 25 dancers from Celine Dion’s Las Vegas show, “A New Day” as well as ten L.A.-based dancers.
