Ramon del Barrio - Director/Choreographer/Performer
Award-winning choreographer Ramon del Barrio is one of the entertainment industry's most versatile talents today. Best known for his critically-acclaimed and award-winning work for Larry Hart's musical, Sisterella, Ramon received the prestigious N.A.A.C.P. theater award for "Best Musical staging and Choreography." Praise from theater critics include Laurie Winer of The Los Angeles Times who wrote, "...del Barrio" brings MTV to the stage in the wittiest and most exciting hybrid of the two-forms I have ever seen. In number after funky number, he expertly manipulates a large cast of dancers to make the stage explode with movement from every corner." Sisterella has played to sold out performances throughout Europe and Australia and is slated to return to Los Angeles in 2005.
As a dancer and singer, Ramon has performed on a multitude of television specials and series that include ``The Academy Awards``, ``The American Music Awards``, ``The Gershwin Gala with Baryshnikov``, ``Broadway Sings Jule Styne`` with Chita Rivera for PBS, ``The Tracey Ullman Show``, ``In Living Color``, ``Solid Gold Hits`` and Barbra Streisand 2000 Democratic National Convention fundraiser. Tour performances include Whitney Houston "Moment of Truth" world tour, Lionel Richie and ``Latin Rhythms`` with Chita Rivera. Broadway productions include Roza and Carousel at Lincoln Center; off-Broadway includes Genesis and Temptation at the New York Shakespeare Festival with Joseph Papp. Ramon has also completed soundtracks for Sisterella MJJ/Sony and Dreamworks THE PRINCE OF EGYPT.
Ramon was the first "prime time" heavy on ABC's reality-based series, " Making The Band", where he served as the on-camera director/choreographer for the multi-platinum and boy-band pop sensation, "O-Town" (J Records). Other staging and choreography credits include "Sweet Lillies Cabaret" Sahara Hotel, Las Vegas. Larry Hart's "Pan Jam," " Have a Rotten Christmas" and "Praise."
Recent projects include staging "The Pointer Sisters Live" DVD as well as staging and choreographing the Los Angeles premiere of Funny Bizness, a musical written by Holly Leven.
In 2003, Ramon was nominated for an American Choreography Award for his work in WHEN THE KIDS ARE AWAY, a short film directed by Jon Chu. Film festival screenings include New York`s Tribeca Film Festival and the Newport Beach Film Festival as well as a prominent feature in High Def magazine. Other film credits include choreography for TIN CUP starring Kevin Costner and Linda Hart, THE MAMBO KINGS (as a dancer and assistant to Michael Peters) and most recently, WEST BANK STORY, directed by Ari Sandal.
Upcoming projects include directing and choreographing The 2004 American Choreography Awards 10th Year Anniversary Celebration. In addition, Ramon will be staging and choreographing the West Coast premiere of Four Guys Named Jose and A Girl Named Maria, a new musical opening in Long Beach, California in November 2004. Ramon is also the director and co-producer of the Los Angeles Dance Invitational, a national dance concert with proceeds benefiting children in need.
